The Non-formal Education Division(N.F.E.D) core mandate is to improve life of the illiterate especially the rural poor by providing equality functional literacy.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE NATIONAL FUNCTION LITERACY PROGRAMME ARE:
1.To provide equality basic literacy services to new group in reading,writing ,numeracy,local language and English.
2.To sustain the literacy skills of neo-literacy
3.To promote the Quality and Efficiency of monitoring, evaluation and research activities
4.To promote the application of acquired functional skills towards self and community development
5.To develop and upgrade the occupation skills of learners particularly income generating group to be efficient users of financial credit.
6.To use radio and printed materials to complement,support and promote literacy.
BENEFIT OF LITERACY
Functional literacy is the ability to read,write,and calculate.The acquisition of other skills to effectively function in the society.Individual who are literate have many advantages over those who can not read,write,calculate and analyse issues critically.
1.Literacy enables people to read road signs,house numbers,buses,trains and thus enabling the individuals to find their way around more easily.
2.Literacy enables people to read instructions given on medicines and drugs and therefor avoid mistakes that cloud lead to disaster .
3.Literacy enables learners to read the correct instructions on agricultural inputs and understanding the proper application of chemicals on their farm products in addition to these,they are able to read scales,measurement instructions and prices of goods correctly thus avoiding mistakes and being cheated.
4.Literacy enables people to know what is happening in other parts of the world and country.
5.Literacy parents are able to encourage their children to do their school work and also remain in school.
NEW RECRUITMENT OF LEARNERS:New recruitment of learners is ongoing through the community entry in various Towns in Kwahu South District to open new classes.
LITERACY DAY CELEBRATION:The N.F.E.D Units is preparing for its Literacy Day Celebration which comes on the 4th September,2018 at Pitiku Zone under the theme”THE ABUSE OF TRAMADOL IN OUR COMMUNITY ,THE ROLE OF THE ADULT LEARNER”.
ACHIEVEMENT IN 2017:The following were the achievements made in 2017:
- Two hundred and six (206) learners graduated in English Language through our programme were awarded certificates for successful completion of their course.The learners are to read,write and communicate in simple English language ,read their Bibles,fill forms at banks without any assistance .Thus reducing illiteracy rate in the District.
- Three hundred and twenty-six (326) learners also graduated in various local language i.e Twi,Danbge and Ewe.They can now read and write in their local language especially reading the Holy Bible in their various churches and also raising their standard of living’
- A young learner by name Abudulai Paate who passed through our programme and has completed Abetifi Technical Institute has gained admission at All Nations University at Koforidua. He is seeking financial support from Philanthropist and N.G.O’s to enable him pay his fees.This is a great achievement by the learner and the District Office.
